I don't want to take anything away from people who have their nice guitars and leave them as-is, or the people who go ahead and upgrade even the guitars that start out top-of-the-line.however, I find something really appealing about taking something that's cheap and run-of-the-mill, and turning it into something unique. As long as it plays okay and sounds okay to begin with, then you have yourself a blank slate, a clean canvas upon which to paint. With cheap guitars, though, you don't have to worry about ruining any value. You might as well leave it the way it is - in fact, you'd better, otherwise you risk killing the value of the instrument. When you get a Gibson, you know it's going to be a fantastic machine with top-of-the-line electronics, screaming humbuckers, perfect action.etcetera. There's something nice about a guitar that's not nice.
